About Our Team
You Are Not Alone in This
We did not build this service to sit behind heavy office desks, wear clinical coats, or hand you stacks of boring paperwork. We built this on a foundation of hope, because we know that trying to start over or step back out into the community alone can feel like standing on the edge of a massive, scary cliff—and we firmly believe that real personal transformation is always possible.
Traditional offices can feel stiff, cold, and uncomfortable. We do things differently with a deep sense of empathy, choosing to meet you exactly where you are instead of expecting you to come to us. We are a team of real people who have walked difficult paths ourselves, and because provincial agencies, families, and community partners are reaching out to us right now, we are actively growing bigger and bigger every single day to meet the demand. We bring down-to-earth support, everyday life-skill coaching, and animal assisted activities with our trained dogs right to your neck of the woods in our mobile unit, anywhere across PEI. We specialize in low-barrier, mobile support, including unconditional, four-legged encouragement for men finding their footing. We promise to bring you dedicated, focused support, because we believe nobody should navigate this road alone.
My Path to This Work
My journey didn’t start in a sterile office or a textbook. It started with a desire to understand people, to learn, and to figure out how we actually thrive when life gets incredibly hard.
Over the last 20 years, I have travelled, lived, and worked in almost every province and territory in Canada. Every two to three years, I packed up my life and dog, moved to a new corner of the country, and immersed myself in the local way of life. In every single location, I worked directly within the justice system, mental health services, and addictions field—both out in the community and inside institutions. This wasn’t just a job; it was a masterclass in understanding how men from all walks of life cope, survive, and rebuild in our society.
One of the most defining chapters of my life took me to the quiet, vast expanses of Baffin Island. I found myself living and working in the Arctic bush alongside detained men and Elders. Stepping into a completely different world, I initially thought I was there to help. Instead, the land and the people became my greatest teachers.
In that harsh, beautiful Arctic environment, I watched men who had been locked in concrete cells find their footing, their peace, and their self-worth. They didn’t do it through clinical programs—they did it by reconnecting to the land, to the silence of nature, and to each other. The routine of surviving, hunting, and navigating the Arctic climate forced a presence of mind that quieted internal chaos, instilled discipline, and built genuine pride.
That chapter completely rewrote what I believed about justice and survival. It taught me that we do not heal alone in a room. We heal by leaning on each other and being surrounded by a supportive community. It proved to me that no matter what you have done, or how far you have fallen, you are never disposable. You have a role. You have value. You deserve respect.
I am an educated professional, but my deepest credentials come from my own lived experience. I walk this path alongside you as someone who intimately understands complex grief and significant trauma. I know what it feels like to rebuild your life from the ground up. I know just how helpful the human animal bond is and have always had a dog by my side through all of my moves, work adventures, and every challenging moment life has to throw at us.
Because of that, my approach at Hopeful Authentic Pathways is completely non-clinical. I am not here to diagnose you, slap a label on you, or treat you like a patient. I am here to help you take your power back. Together, we focus on how you can thrive and live your absolute best quality of life while managing your challenges right here in the real world.
True rehabilitation isn’t about forcing you into a rigid mold; it’s about reconnecting to the basics of what makes life worth living. I help men build a practical bridge back to society by focusing on three core connections:
- Connection to Animals: You are never alone in this. My animal assisted activities partner, Gertie, is a vital part of our work. Gertie offers what humans sometimes struggle to give: unconditional, zero-judgment safety. She grounds the space when things get heavy and reminds us how to trust again.
- Connection to Community & Peers: True healing happens out in the open, not in isolation. We work on building a network of people who see you for who you are today—not who you were yesterday, and not the diagnosis you were labelled with.
- Connection to Work & Purpose: Everyone needs a reason to get up in the morning. We focus on finding meaningful ways for you to contribute, feel useful, and reclaim your financial and personal independence.
You deserve to live the life you desire, on your own terms, in your own community and Gertie, our Peer Mentors and I are happy to help!
Our Safe, Loving Animal Partners
When stress and anxiety are running high, sitting in a quiet room and being forced to talk about your deepest feelings can make you want to walk away. Our four-year-old valley bulldog completely shifts the energy surrounding us; her presence, snorts, clown-like behaviours and grumbles often lighten the mood. She acts as a gentle circuit-breaker for stress, naturally helping the nervous system calm down so that real, meaningful connection can happen, because true healing always takes place within safe relationships. She does not care about past mistakes or clinical labels. She is a wonderful friend who loves helping people find peace, and she is always incredibly excited to hop out of the SUV to meet you.
Right now, she is also working hard on training a new animal friend to join the team. This new friend had a very difficult start to life, which has made her extremely compassionate to the struggles of others. We are all living this journey to healing together through true connection—humans and animals alike.
True Peer Support from Individuals Who Have Been There
You cannot fake true understanding. Our lead peer mentor is a well-known, rock-solid face in the local Island recovery community. He brings a decade of his own personal recovery journey along with eight years of working professionally inside mental health and addiction environments. As a dad, a son, a partner, and a brother, he knows exactly how much heavy lifting it takes to establish a safe, steady routine and maintain housing or legal stability on the outside. He leads our 12-week peer support circles across all three PEI counties, sharing his real, honest story to help light the way for others. He has walked in the exact shoes our clients are wearing, and he constantly upgrades his training right here on the Island to ensure his deep empathy is always backed by excellent safety and coaching standards.
Our other peer mentors bring 32 years of combined lived experience to the team. They continue to grow and heal every day while positively contributing to the lives of other men. Their enthusiasm is refreshing. Having successfully navigated through their own journeys of healing and community stability alongside our founder, consultants, and lead mentor, these men are living proof of how effective this structured peer model is. Today, they operate as disciplined, accountable workers who continually strive to gain more professional training and education, ensuring they deliver the highest standard of peer assistance to men re-entering community life.
